The Paros Innovation Center is providing the technological support for AIgaio, an initiative that transforms the traditional settlement of Paroikia into an open field of learning, observation and discovery.

For us, innovation is not something detached from place. It becomes meaningful when it connects with the history, needs and identity of an island community.

The Cyclades are more than a geographical area. They form a complex cultural landscape where architecture, history, everyday life, the natural environment and human presence coexist. Paroikia is a particularly rich example of this multidimensional character.

In its narrow streets, stone, marble, wood, architectural proportions, reused elements and small details from different periods create an environment where the past is not simply nearby. It remains embedded in the present.

AIgaio brings this relationship into focus through observation and documentation supported by contemporary technology.

Innovation as a tool for understanding place

In AIgaio, technology is not an end in itself.

Geolocation, digital photography, field applications, 3D scanning, 3D printing and artificial intelligence are used as tools that help participants observe more carefully, ask questions and document what they discover.

This reflects a broader way of thinking about innovation on islands.

Insularity is often described only in terms of constraints: distance, small scale, seasonality and limited access to infrastructure and expertise.

But islands can also become powerful living laboratories.

Their scale allows new technologies to be tested in real environments, around real challenges, with direct involvement from local communities.

Bridging the past and the future

A community’s relationship with its history is not only about knowledge.

It is about continuity.

Understanding the past reminds us that the places we inhabit did not begin with our own generation. They are the result of centuries of human presence, expressed through architecture, materials, language, customs and the way space has been shaped.

Strengthening this connection can also contribute to a deeper and more meaningful sense of national identity.

Not an identity based only on symbols or on a static image of the past, but one grounded in knowledge, understanding and an active relationship with cultural heritage.

Technology can become a bridge in that process.

Not by replacing historical or scientific research, but by creating new ways for people to access, observe and engage with it.

The most important dimension: education

For the Paros Innovation Center, the most important aspect of AIgaio may be its educational value.

During the activity, children will not encounter just one technology.

They will experience an entire ecosystem of tools:

  • smartphones and tablets used as field instruments,
  • geolocation and spatial recording,
  • digital photographic documentation,
  • a purpose-built web application,
  • data collection and organisation,
  • 3D scanning,
  • 3D printing,
  • artificial intelligence,
  • visual comparison and analysis,
  • digital maps and live visualisation of team progress.

What matters most is that they will not encounter these technologies only through a presentation.

They will use them.

They will have to observe, decide what is worth recording, photograph it, describe it, geolocate it and later present their findings.

Technology therefore moves from passive consumption to an instrument of exploration, creation and research.

This is one of the core educational principles of the Paros Innovation Center.

We are not interested only in children knowing that artificial intelligence, robotics or 3D printing exist.

We want them to understand when, why and how these technologies can be useful.

From the digital world back to the real world

At a time when much of children’s interaction with technology happens through screens, AIgaio follows the opposite direction.

It uses the screen to bring them back into the physical world.

To look more carefully at a wall.

To notice a marble detail.

To ask why it is there.

To compare.

To discuss.

To collaborate.

To document.

And finally, to return with a finding and explain to others what they observed.

That process lies at the heart of experiential learning.

Innovation with roots

The Paros Innovation Center supports AIgaio because we believe that innovation does not need to disconnect a society from its past.

It can do exactly the opposite.

It can help us understand it better.

Document it.

Share it.

Pass it on to the next generation.

And perhaps most importantly, it can help create young people who do not only know how new technologies work, but also understand why they are worth using.

On 28 August, Paroikia becomes a large open learning laboratory.

And perhaps this is one of the most meaningful forms of innovation:

using the tools of the future to better understand where we come from.
